Which browsers work best with the Annotator?

Welcome to the Annotator Help Center! We want to make sure you have the best experience when adding annotations to web pages. The browser you use to view the internet (like Chrome or Firefox) is very important for making the Annotator tool work correctly.

Why does my browser matter?

Think of your browser as the stage for the Annotator. Modern browsers have the up-to-date features and speed necessary for the Annotator tool to appear, let you highlight text, and save your notes reliably. If your browser is too old, or not on our supported list, you might run into problems like missing buttons, annotations not saving, or slow performance.

Supported Browsers

The Annotator is designed to work with any major, up-to-date web browser. We strongly recommend using a version that has been released within the last year to ensure you have the latest security and features.

The officially supported browsers include:

  • Google Chrome

  • Mozilla Firefox

  • Apple Safari

  • Microsoft Edge (The newer version, based on Chromium)

  • Opera

  • Vivaldi

  • Brave

Please Note: Older, retired browsers like Internet Explorer and the original, older version of Microsoft Edge are not supported. If you are using one of these, you will need to switch to one of the browsers listed above to use the Annotator.

How to get the Annotator

To use the Annotator on a website, you typically install a browser extension (sometimes called an “add-on”).

If you use Google Chrome (or a similar browser like Edge, Opera, Vivaldi, or Brave), the official Chrome extension is the easiest and most reliable way to start annotating. You can find it by searching your browser’s dedicated extension store.
